Congratulations on hitting that submit button! You’ve navigated the drafting and revising maze, and that’s no small feat. While the hardest part may be behind you, there are still some essential steps to ensure your applications shine and keep you on track in the months ahead.
1. Check Your Applicant Portals
Within a few days to a week of submission, colleges will send you login details for their applicant portals. These portals are critical, as they indicate whether your transcripts, recommendations, test scores, and other materials have arrived safely. Make it a daily habit to log in—missing pieces can easily slip through the cracks, and colleges often won’t send you an email if something is amiss!
2. Keep an Eye on Your Email
Your inbox is where the magic happens! Important updates—like missing documents, interviews, or scholarship opportunities—often land in your email. Make sure you’re using a professional address and check it daily to stay in the loop.
3. Verify Supporting Materials
Double-check that your high school has sent out your transcripts and recommendations, and confirm that your test scores (if applicable) are accounted for. If anything seems off, don’t hesitate to reach out to your school counselor. Remember, colleges can take 7–10 business days to process materials, so give it a little time before you follow up.
4. Stay on Top of Financial Aid
Don’t let financial aid deadlines sneak up on you! Complete the FAFSA, CSS Profile (if required), and any school-specific financial aid forms by their deadlines—they often differ from application deadlines. Stay organized to ensure you don’t miss out on valuable support!
5. Keep Your Grades Strong
Colleges will review midyear reports, so keep your focus sharp! A significant dip in your performance can impact admissions decisions. Stay motivated and finish strong!
6. Say Thank You and Breathe
Take a moment to express your gratitude to your teachers and counselors for their invaluable support—it truly makes a difference. And don’t forget to give yourself a breather. You’ve worked hard; now it’s time to stay organized and prepare for the next steps, like interviews or updates!
Submitting your applications is a monumental step in your journey. By staying proactive and carefully checking portals and deadlines, you’ll ensure nothing slips through the cracks—while still leaving yourself time to enjoy your senior year.
